What do you think we should discuss in this session? 1) Why people participate in these sites. 2) To what degree do these sites replace or complement offline social networks. 3) Why are these sites a cause of concern? 4) Other topics?

How might these sites be empowering for participants of sub-altern identities?
eg. A queer male in a small town...or others that might face negative social sanctioning/discrimination in their everyday lives, but can connect with others in similar situations through myspace communities....
How about the isolated housepartner (previously known as wife!)?
There's a lot of buzz about teens using myspace to get up to 'no good'. What about trying out possible identities in a semi-anonymous and safe feeling space?
