Online support groups. They tell you not to worry.
Online support groups -- obscure illnesses more likely to have online support groups.
Amazon long tails of distribution. What proportion of sales come from topo selling books. 30-40% of sales come from obscure books.
WSJ article says it's not that high. Value in niche production and sales.
Librarins are worried about wikipedia -- quality concerns. Community effort working toward improving quality. Ensuring that model of collective effort is actually resulting in a community of practice.

Whole community of science has to adopt a new venue for ligitimation.
Archive in Physics. In CS conference proceedings counts as a publication. Archive allows you to date/time stamp you publications. Not in the case in sociology -- not differently a difference in quality.

We've been distracted by looking at netscan images (we'll post them later to the wiki) describing alt.support groups. We're considering the thesis that ailments that are relatively rare offline will be overrepresented online.
Chrons-colitis was one good indicator of this in netscan. A relatively rare disorder that is highly discussed in its group.
One problem that is so much of this discussion has migrated from Usenet to web boards. Usenet is not a very good environment for such a discussion.
What kind of tools and sampling strategies would be appropriate
