Health information -- dissemination of information in a group needs one person who can then distribute off line

Authenticity and quality

Many false positives --how is this different from the med student phenomena. You've got what you just finished studying.

What are differneces -- org. imperative for online to say this is more serious to limit liability.

Knowledge becomes more extreme as it is collectively authored.

What about the wiki - is bad quality of information. Consensus reality may not be right.

Culture trumps reality.

Schelling individual choices lead to segregated choices based on small differences.

3. models

Converge on consensus

Few centrist bloggers.

Or may try to find a divergent point of view to have someone to argue.

When are health decisions conflictual. Should you have a v-back. There may be divergent views. Obgyn will be against. Internet will have divergent views.

Who is pulled to the web -- pregnant women. Birth education processes.

What about class bias -- mp3 players.

Online support groups. They tell you not to worry.

Online support groups -- obscure illnesses more likely to have online support groups.

Amazon long tails of distribution. What proportion of sales come from topo selling books. 30-40% of sales come from obscure books.

WSJ article says it's not that high. Value in niche production and sales.

Librarins are worried about wikipedia -- quality concerns. Community effort working toward improving quality. Ensuring that model of collective effort is actually resulting in a community of practice.

Wiki makes good citations but not citable and that undercuts its legitimacy.

but you need a good way to make accsessible Fernanda Viegas -- history flow.

Wikipedia is one type of wiki -- what defines different types of review.

Security through obscurity may protect content on wikis.

What roles do librarians have to play in making information available.

Role of Elsevier.

Whole community of science has to adopt a new venue for ligitimation.

Archive in Physics. In CS conference proceedings counts as a publication. Archive allows you to date/time stamp you publications. Not in the case in sociology -- not differently a difference in quality.

We've been distracted by looking at netscan images (we'll post them later to the wiki) describing alt.support groups. We're considering the thesis that ailments that are relatively rare offline will be overrepresented online.

Chrons-colitis was one good indicator of this in netscan. A relatively rare disorder that is highly discussed in its group.

One problem that is so much of this discussion has migrated from Usenet to web boards. Usenet is not a very good environment for such a discussion.

What kind of tools and sampling strategies would be appropriate
